Margaret Thatcher and Nigel Lawson in 1989
Margaret Thatcher and Nigel Lawson in 1989

A lay in on a fine and very warm day which I started by mowing the games lawn as Daniel cleaned my car for me. After a nice roast chicken Sunday lunch, Daniel helped me pull The Lady onto the mooring after which I commissioned its toilets water system engine and heating. The Chinese police are arresting leading dissidents and back home Liverpool dockers continue strike action and Chancellor Lawson and Margaret Thatcher disagree on the causes of inflation

We all had a fair lay in this morning and did not come down to breakfast until 8:30 AM. A fine fried breakfast for the first time in a while and then to my conservatory to feed the fish and open the ventilators. The weather was fine and very warm today and so I decided to work outside rather than in my office. I decided to mow the games lawn first and had to commission the fine roller mower. This took a while but, when using machine, I found that the games lawn is less uneven than last year and has benefited from the winters top dressing. I got Daniel to clean the car is why I was doing all this and then we played a game of bowls together when we had finished. A lunch of nice roast chicken and then this afternoon I decided to tackle the boat. Daniel helped me pull The Lady to the mooring by the summerhouse and then I commission the toilets, the water system, the engine and heating system.

The latter gave me some trouble and I found out that the fuel pump was sticking again. This took me all afternoon and some of the evening and I use the rest of the evening to study my files and work out the component costs of the Hayling view. It cost some £260,000 but I value the sum of the parts at about £400,000 at today’s prices. The world news is of the Chinese police issuing warrants for the arrest of two leading dissidents who are seeking sanctuary at the US embassy in Peking. Tension is mounting about their fate. In Britain, the Liverpool dockers voted to continue strike action. Chancellor Lawson was interviewed for TV today and did not agree with Thatcher’s views on the reason for resurgent inflation. He still wants to enter the EMS with sterling, but Thatcher remains against it. The le Mons 24-hour race was won by two Mercedes with Porsche and Jaguar third and fourth.
