Taking Sam to Trevor and Barbara Rigby in Lincoln to stay for a training holiday as I prepare for Paris. Chrisula Jackson and her three girls arrived to play with our girls after which I watched a Michael Cane film "The Fourth Protocol" on TV

Today was the day for me to take Sam to the Rigbys and, due to my needing an early start, I was not able to spend much time out with him before setting off. He is now settled on a single meal a day and seems to thrive on it. His dropping are harder and he manages to eat more overall without getting a tummy upset.

I was late starting but the journey went well and I arrived on time at 10.00am to be met by Barbara Rigby as Trevor was out for the morning. The maid took Sam straight off to his pen and fed him his morning meal to settle him down and I completed the boarding form before Barbara settled down to chat with me for a while about Sam in particular and German Pointers in general.

They had about 4/5 dogs in their kitchen and another dozen or more in the purpose-built block including this £6,000 black import that Jim and others are always raving about. She would have had me staying longer, but I saw that she was busy with the kennels and I had to get back so I left them to it in the knowledge that Sam was in good hands.

The journey back went even better but I noted how the traffic northbound from London had picked up as the morning had wore on and was quite jammed through some road works. It now seems that those people coming to London for the week are leaving earlier and earlier on Fridays. Diana prepared us lunch at home and then I spent the afternoon clearing away my desk and attending to all manner of correspondence.

My trust solicitor has submitted an account (much delayed from three years ago as if shy) that is treble the amount he charged the year before! Later, Chris Jackson and her three girls arrived to play with our girls and they raced around the house enjoying themselves before we all settled down to a children's' tea of chocolate, cake etc. which is most unhealthy and does no good for my physique.

I am now half a stone overweight again but I actually got Daniel on the scales today and found him to be even heavier than me! Diana had worked quite hard on getting the swimming pool clean for the girls to use but they balked at the cold weather and her labours were lost. I reviewed our arrangements for France and offered Diana the chance of us staying at a Heathrow Airport Hotel as we had to leave so early in the morning which would have us tired and Daniel driving in that condition.

She spent some time sorting one out and then we telephoned them and faxed our confirmation accordingly before retiring to bed. Feeling as if I deserved some relaxation, I then watched a Michael Cane film "The Fourth Protocol" on the TV before following Diana on much later. In fact Daniel had come home by then which showed how late it was.
