Murdoch faces 8,000 pickets that block his Wapping plant today

A better day for our heating and for us spent at home for much of the time until a short shopping trip to St Neots, meeting David & Moira Biggins in the process, before Daniel and I sort out a few rooms at The Hayling View. This as The US resumes nuclear tests and Prince Charles breaks his finger but Murdoch has to face 8,000 pickets that block his Wapping Plant

Slow to wake again and Di brought up my tea to me in bed. The heating had come on again, as the pilot light stays on with the timers off. In view of our movements these last few days, I persuaded Di to stay at home this morning and, whilst she tidied up the kitchen and started cleaning out the new parts of the building, I stayed in the lounge and looked after the girls, whilst I read a backlog of newspapers. Quite a trying time as it always seems that sisters try to play together nicely, but invariably find it difficult to get on. No workers today, which was a pleasant relief. I took Debbie out to tend the ducks and doves – 9 eggs and the doves still incubating, and we enjoyed it, but found the cold wind quite daunting. This wind got up a lot later today and ended up quite a gale.

Nothing much in the post to speak of. Later I got the car out and the girls joined me for the trip to St Neots. We got our Sunday joint, collected Daniel and set off for the Happy Eater for a pleasant lunch. David & Moira Biggins came over and said hello. After, Di bought another large log basket from the adjacent filling station forecourt and I filled up the Jaguar’s tyres with air from the pump. Home then and no sign of Daniel’s friend Paul and so Dan helped me with the task of putting some new pine furniture in his room and then preparing the rest for Della’s new nursery. We assembled the oak bedstead as well and found, to our amazement, that the double bed and mattress kept elsewhere fitted it exactly. I agreed with Daniel and Di that we will change the rooms around again in the morning to let Dan have the oak bed and Della her nursery. The television for a while, my journal, then very tired to bed; setting the pilot to fire the boiler in the morning again and going up to get Di’s assistance with some regular servicing of my prostate gland, as I have no appointment yet. News today of a bizarre turn of events in Dublin, as IRA suspect, Evelyn Glenholmes, was released, rearrested, and then released again. It seems that the extradition warrant was defective on a technicality and the courts refused custody whilst a new warrant was drawn up. More speculation on child molestation as this time a vicar is accused by the media, but without sufficient charges or evidence being offered by the police. The United States held the first nuclear test – an underground event in Nevada, since the USSR test ban was offered. The Prince of Wales breaks a finger planting a tree this weekend, but was allowed to go home with the finger set and protected. Excitement in the West Indies as the England bowlers dismiss the home team for 418 and then were 110 for 1 at the close of play on the second day. Late tonight 8,000 print, newspaper and distribution workers marched on News International’s Wapping plant, completely blocking the road and preventing newspaper lorries from coming out.
