Collecting Diana and Daniella from hospital on a very hot day and enjoying our first meal together as a family as four Nigerians are detained for the ‘diplomatic box kidnapping’

I had set the alarm radio to awaken me much later but Daniel and Deborah came in and woke me up and so I sent them off to get a cup of tea for me! We laid up for breakfast and ate cereal and toast and after we washed up and tidied the house in anticipation of Diana’s return home today. Daniel off to school and then Debbie and I let out the ducks and wash the eggs. Off to the factory to sort through the mail and take out the journals and personally addressed letters, and then on to Huntingdon and Hinchinbrook Hospital.

I noticed again how close the Pepy’s House is to Hinchinbrook House and wondered whether Montague’s wife’s family followed her to Brampton; or whether she was already a local girl. To Rowan Ward and to find that the paediatrician had not taken Daniella’s blood sample and we had a frustrating hour’s wait until the results were know. In the event she was clear of jaundice. Then still more delay stopping in Huntingdon to get a couple of ‘nipple protectors’ from Boots, before a hot and sticky drive to Kimbolton to collect Daniel over an hour late.

Off then to The Happy Eater for our first meal together as a family of 5. Daniella slept very soundly throughout lunch in her carry-cot and Diana managed a full meal. Home then and the temperature was well above 80*F. The weather forecasts are warning of drought and water restrictions coming. A peaceful afternoon in a shady and cool house with Diana settling in and feeding the baby, and me watching Martina Navratilova beating Chris Lloyd in the women’s singled final at Wimbledon.

Later I had to go and help Marilyn catch her ducklings in another nonsensical episode and then to prepare a splendid barbeque by the river which we all enjoyed.

News today of the release of the Lagos airliner as four men are detained by the British Police, charged with kidnapping. Also of gala marches and speeches led by the coal miners leader Arthur Scargill.
