The Thatcher government cutting N.H.S. budgets

Dan and Deb ill at home as I have a office catch up day and complete Byte Shop reorganisation and arrangements for Minister’s meeting. The Thatcher government cutting N.H.S. budgets but fortunately the hanging vote fails

Another very hot and humid day. An early start whilst Daniel and Debby stay at home in bed with sore throats and coughs. First to let the ducks out and then to the office and to see Derek Weatherby. After agreeing unanimously the new Job Title for Peter King, he phones at 9.00am and I am able to confirm his new title as The Managing Director of The Byte Shop Limited.

Urgent phone calls to all branch managers and Directors announcing the decisions as a courtesy and then a hectic morning completing work, catching up on two days away and dictating urgent correspondence – a reference for Bob Robinson, a letter to each of several managing directors asking them to join us for the Minister’s meeting and finally the organisational memoranda confirming the changes. A reaction of support and agreement all round, but Peter begins to realise the magnitude of the task ahead for him. This afternoon a personnel induction meeting with the new Southampton manager, Russ Wilmott, in whom I have the greatest confidence. This evening preparing The Lady for some varnishing and sanding tomorrow and then the television news, which is full of information about the Government spending cuts. The N.H.S. budget is to be cut now that the election is over. To bed during a slightly cooler evening.
