A successful day at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court securing approval for the Wines & Spirits License Transfer for Redgrave Drinks sales.

Visits from Alan Brunton of software company RSA and the arrival of the party of four from Spar which was useful because they were able to tie up on the operation of the computer system with Blakemore data files.

Then with CSL shop-fitting representative and ordering £13,500 worth of equipment.

A rush to get to Norwich in time to walk the dog by the river and then see ‘An Inspector Calls’, the JB Priestley war time play which was on at the Theatre Royal.

It was pouring with rain this morning and this continued most of the day.

We had to set off early, load up the car and walk the dog in these conditions and I was a little irritable as I was also quite tired.

Good progress however on our way to Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court where we had been summoned to appear for the Wines & Spirits License Transfer Session.

We stopped by our favourite stream as Wiggly stayed in the car working still, as I donned waterproofs and took Sam quartering across a field of stubble containing pheasant chicks.

To the magistrates court in good time though we had a long argument with the County Council about being able to park our car. It was a full and busy session for drinks licenses with most applicants being there to get special one day licenses for social functions.

Always strange to see how nervous everybody seems to be and in awe even the justices, police and court staff behave so, which is strange.

We successfully obtained the transfer of the license even though we had not really complied with the regulations on the serving of notices. At least we had saved the cost of a solicitor.

The drive back to Redgrave happy that we had concluded the two most difficult days activities yet for our new shop venture. Nevertheless there was still much to do as we first were briefed about the aftermath of the parish meeting.

Sarah had picked up several critical comments about the newsletter though everyone was keen to support the store. Chris had also been offended by it and referred to nasty letters that I had sent to his mother in times past, but I was not provoked.

Sarah was already making her impression on the shop and now the post office area had been tidied completely. Our first meeting was with Alan Brunton of software company RSA who demonstrated the system with a till and then spoke to Wiggly about the range of facilities it could provide.

His time overlapped with the arrival of the party of four from Spar which was useful because they were able to tie up on the operation of the computer system with Blakemore data files.

I left Wiggly to deal with RSA and Sarah to talk to the merchandising manager and local Spar rep whilst I dealt with the CSL shop-fitting representative and ordering £13,500 worth of equipment.

It seems that these plans will reach fruition but there will be the need to make several alterations to the shop beforehand. The meetings went on and then we needed time with Sarah afterwards.

By now Mark had joined her and they had settled in to the downstairs flat and seemed quite at home.

Sarah’s mum, Jenny, had done something of a spring clean which was necessary after the poor housekeeping of the Butterfields which had left the house covered with dog hairs and smelling.

A rush for us to get to Norwich in time to walk the dog by the river and then see ‘An Inspector Calls’, the JB Priestley war time play which was on at the Theatre Royal.

We had no time to change, shave etc and went straight there, but we were comfortable and enjoyed the performance. Back to Harnser for the night ordering Chinese takeaway from Mr Chans by telephone from the car on the way.

A nice meal after which Wiggly offered to type in some of my journal as I dictated it, which saved a lot of time. Isn't she a doll! (She types)
