This dull and drizzly day was better for both daughters going off to school happily and doing well there. Nigel dropped in with some disturbing news about Katie and the KSS from which I would now resign. I sat and relaxed in front of the TV to diffuse my ill temper and then went to bed far too late again.

I was tired this morning after the late night but still managed to get down from breakfast before the girls had gone. Della was doing her shivering act whilst getting dressed and then was worried about being sick and wetting herself before going to school, but she went off without crying as an improvement on last week! Diana came back from the bus stop for another coffee to soothe herself as I read this morning's papers and mail. I then settled down to reconcile my finances and then finish off updating my journal whilst Di went into St Neots to do some shopping.

The weather had turned dull this morning and was drizzling at first and, together with yesterday's overnight shower, this small amount of rain was very welcome. I had an unexpected visitor in Nigel Smith who had dropped by on the off-chance and he joined me for coffee and we chatted about our respective summers. The Smiths had been in Spain and the Mediterranean with their villa and boat and the weather had been above 30degC for much of the time. Most dramatic news was the fact that Katie's school in Bedford had decided to close down at the end of the current school year because of the recession. Katie is a God-daughter of mine and I am concerned because she is very immature and may even be educationally sub-normal but has been happy at this school and now they intend her to go away to board at a school in Bath.

Of lesser import but of equal note was a report from Nigel that a Kimbolton School Society Committee member had been slagging me off in a Kimbolton pub for "not pulling my weight". This was a result of my exchange of letters with the committee secretary who, in common with many members of the committee, seem to regard their main function as that of providing labour for social events rather than that organising and management skills. I had since had a letter from the Chairman, expressing his support and concern but I think I shall confirm my resignation because I was only on the committee because I was approached in the first place and have more than enough contributions to make elsewhere.

It was lunch time and then I resumed my preparations for this evening's meeting. I worked on to have a late tea break and then I typed up a report on the party conference, created an agenda and then photocopied a number of important briefing papers. The girls returned from tea quite content with their day at school. Debbie is doing well at English and has had a poem and essay accepted for the "wall display" and for the Kimboltonian magazine. Della has passed a test for her mathematical tables and seems to be managing the work very well. I was looking forward to this evening's meeting of my District Council Group, but it was somewhat spoiled by one member announcing that they had to go by a certain time and another arriving late to make the request of the first very difficult. ]

Also, by another member not turning up at all! Debbie had a school friend round to go swimming and, with Diana out for a while taking her back home, I also had to field a couple of requests from Della as well to add to my frustration. After they had all left, I sat and relaxed in front of the TV to diffuse my ill temper and then went to bed far too late again. The Tory press are baiting Neil Kinnock now that his party is down five points in the opinion polls and try to speculate about him standing down as Labour Party leader which is a good mischief story at the start of an election campaign. Attempts at European mediation in the Yugoslavian crisis are torpedoed by the continued fighting and it seems that the army have the Croatian rebels on the run towards the Adriatic Ports which are also blockaded.
