St Neots Carnival Parade
St Neots Carnival Parade

A day of eye tests for the family and, after Daniel left with Angela for Norfolk, and Debbie went to a friend for a sleep-over, I took Diana and Della to see the St Neots Carnival Parade where my friends were on the reviewing stand. The Soviet peaceful revolution goes on as Gorbachev surrenders to the inevitable and distances himself from the Communist Party.

I was a little slow to rise this morning and then did the chores of watering and feeding the plants and animals. The peacock is still a regular visitor but has completely lost all of its display tail feathers which makes it look quite strange. To St Neots with the entire family as we had made prior arrangements for everybody to have an eye test, and this took most of the morning. After Daniel was finished, he took Angela of to Norfolk, stopping off at Mum's bungalow on the way.

Once Debbie was free, Diana took her off to Hemingford Grey for a birthday "sleep-over" with a girlfriend and this left me with Della. Her eye test was satisfactory, being a little long-sighted but not needing glasses; and I was shown to be able to benefit from some reading glasses for small print which I will get and use very occasionally. Back home for lunch when I watched more of the Test Match and then I went with Diana and Della to see St Neots Carnival Procession this afternoon. It was a nice day, and the carnival was interesting to watch but there were fewer trade floats than in recent years as the recession takes hold on local firms.

Several of my political colleagues were up on the reviewing stand and I stayed to have a chat with them afterwards. One of them was Ross McKay and I congratulated him on this election victory. Unfortunately, his celebrations were brought up short by the news on his return from holiday that he had lost his job and had been made redundant. The Soviet peaceful revolution goes on as Gorbachev surrenders to the inevitable and disestablishes the Communist Party, disbanding the central committee and stripping them of their property around the Soviet Union. He also resigns from the leadership of the Communist Party and starts the process if disassociating himself from it.
