Our last time in California enjoying breakfast at Coco's and another round of Crazy Golf at the miniature golf course before an early-afternoon flight back to England. These days, even the upstairs section of the British Airways Boeing 747 airliner is crowded with budget passengers and as uncomfortable as ever.

Saddam Hussein and his men had gained the upper hand against the Kurds in Northern Iraq who have been deserted by their US allies. The Los Angeles Police Department leadership is under fire and Teddy Kennedy hosts a drinking party in Palm Beach after which his nephew, William Kennedy-Smith, is accused of rape of a young woman

A day dedicated to travel back from California to England. We were up reasonably early and then went out for breakfast at Coco's which we all enjoyed. Then to the miniature golf course for another round of Crazy Golf before we went back to the hotel to complete our packing. It was after mid-day by now and we had to hustle to get checked out on time. The drive to the airport went well-enough and, by 1.15pm, we were all in the Budget courtesy bus and on our way to the terminal. The normal wait and distress in boarding, thought we we did have a pleasant-enough lunch and a drink at the terminal before getting aboard.

We were booked into the upstairs section of the British Airways Boeing 747 airliner and found the space and surroundings somewhat better than our downstairs experience of last time. The problem was that only one toilet out of the two was working properly which made the trip a bit unsettling. Fine food and service but the lack of space in a full air flight made the experience as uncomfortable as ever. Time was when the upstairs was a spacious first-class lounge but the need for economy had long put paid to that. The American news was all about the aftermath of the Gulf War. Saddam Hussein and his men had gained the upper hand against the Kurds in Northern Iraq and the suffering of the fleeing Kurds had become horrendous.

The criticism of George Bush is that the U.S. Administration encouraged the anti-Sadam uprising and then stood back as the rebels were being hammered. Domestically, the Los Angeles drama of Chief-of-Police Daryl Gates, runs on with his opponents being the Police Commission and City-Mayor Tom Bradley who think that his standards and leadership of city policing leave much to be desired. The other U.S. story is the latest Kennedy tragedy as the surviving brother Teddy Kennedy hosts a drinking party in Palm Beach after which his nephew, William Kennedy-Smith, is accused of rape of a young woman.
