The exodus of East German refugees to the West continues

Tired from lack of sleep on a bright and sunny morning after a cold night, I went out to change the Rolls-Royce spare wheel and give it a complete polish. I visited Dad again this afternoon and the good news was that the plastic surgeon wants to operate on dad but needs the ENT and Neurology consultants to agree, which will take time, after the cancer has spread to his inner ear making the operation tricky.

A testing Little Paxton Parish Council meeting tonight getting them to agree to oppose the gravel pit development, agree and £800 village hall grants and for the siting of a bottle bank.

The exodus of East German refugees to the West continues with 8,000 moved by train as Western nations call for free passage between East and West Berlin. The banks lift interest rates by 1% to 15%, and nine-year high depressing the stock exchange and The Labour Party conference has rejected a call for proportional representation.

I was tired after yet another late night and with a headache from lack of sleep. I still made breakfast with the others and a couple of Nurofen tablets made me feel better. This morning was bright and sunny and so I went out and worked on the Rolls-Royce. I swapped over the spare wheel with the one with a slow puncture and then set about giving the car a complete polish which I finished by the end of the morning. Lunch with Di and then this afternoon, I went over to Cambridge to hear the news on Dad I dropped the tyre offer ATS for repair on the way.

Dad was having an ear, nose and throat examination when I arrived and I chatted to a neighbouring chap from Eaton Socon who knew of me until he got back. The news was that Mr Lambertina (the plastic surgeon) has decided in favour of operating on Dad but needs to wait for the return of the ENT consultant and neurology consultant in 10 to 14 days time who would have to agree to help with the operation. The cancer has spread to dad’s inner ear which makes such an operation very tricky.

The journey home and the evening attending a rather trying parish council meeting. I seem to be fighting for all sorts of things but was generally successful stop I got them to agree to oppose the Diddington gravel extraction on the justification of road disturbance but could not get the parish to agree to special planning committee meetings though a compromise prevailed later, I got the £800 grant for the village hall an agreement in principle from bottle bank on the parish field and so it wasn’t such a bad evening. I stayed up later again watching the TV and the main news today was the banks lifting interest rates by 1% to 15%, and nine-year high which was a course of great political embarrassment to the Tories on the eve of their conference.

The East/West German immigration problems continue amongst human suffering and now led to a US/Britain/France call for free passage between East and West Berlin. 8000 East Germans have been successfully moved by Eastern trains to West Germany. The Labour Party conference has rejected a call for proportional representation, which is a pity. The stock exchange is on the way down again.
