To my Aunt Doris Antrobus’s funeral today and to collect Dad’s old car from Stanton afterwards on an emotional day which ended quite restful. Mikal Gorbachev met Pope John Paul II and established relationships between the Vatican and the USSR as the Eastern European revolutions continue apace

I was awake at 7am for another busy day. Out with Diana in our Ford Escort car to the funeral of my aunt, Doris Antrobus. It was a long drive to the Great Yarmouth/Gorleston Crematorium and we were a little late but still arrived in time for the service. Nobody, except the vicar and us seemed to be singing and I found the crematorium service a bit low key. We went back to Doris’s old house in Ormesby St Margaret for the reception afterwards and met many relatives – including three of Mum’s sisters for whom I arranged to transport to Paxton for Monday. I do not think that many of the rest of them will come then. We came home via Stanton, where we collected Dad’s car and left ours in the garage.

The pity was that I left my wallet at the bungalow and had to rely on Freda bringing it for me on Monday. I always find the empty house a sad experience and, to be driving his car, is an even worse one! It was the only new car he ever had and it was very emotional when I had given it to him. We were late home by this time and had to phone ahead for the children to be picked up from school. I was very tired after these recent days’ exertions and did little this evening except print most of the service sheets for Dad’s funeral, made a number of telephone calls and then updated this last two days’ Journal. The historic news today is of Mikal Gorbachev meeting Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and establishing relationships between the Vatican and the USSR, Gorbachev says.
